Update from AAO

Dr. Akler had the whole ergonomics panel standing at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL
Dear colleagues, friends, patients and family,
I recently returned from the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. It was an honor to have been invited to speak in two different symposiums related to surgeon health and wellness. I was also a wet lab instructor for advanced phacoemulsification (cataract surgery techniques). I love connecting with my colleagues, teaching the next generation of eye surgeons, and learning about new technology.
I would like to share some incredible research being done on implantable devices for patients with advanced dry age-related macular degeneration**. One device, the Prima, bypasses the diseased photoreceptors to induce artificial vision with the help of special glasses. This 2.2 mm chip is implanted surgically under the retina and connects to glasses with a camera and mirror projector. A study performed in Europe showed a mean improvement of 25.5 letters, with 80% of subjects able to read letters/words. While the Prima is not available for sale in the US or Europe currently, it gives hope for patients with advanced disease that in the future, there will be an option to regain functional vision.
At Akler Eye Center, we continue to strive to offer our patients the most advanced medical and surgical eye care with the personal touch we are known for. Here is a recent testimonial:
“Dr Akler’s team works extremely well and highly coordinated to make sure all patients scheduling and services are accomplished on a timely and efficient manner. They treated us extremely well. Dr Akler performed superbly to address my friend’s very difficult and advanced cataracts, and he has come out of the surgery with flying colors. The team also scheduled appointments for me and were very friendly and professional. Highly recommended”
We look forward to seeing you and your family at the office!
Warmly,
Dr. Michelle Akler
