Understanding Cataracts

Cataract Information

One of the commonest causes of deterioration in vision with age is cataract formation. A cataract occurs when the lens inside the eye becomes cloudy. Cataracts cause blurry vision for both distance and near tasks. Common symptoms are glare, sensitivity to light, poor night vision, and difficulty reading, sewing and crafting. Dr. Michelle Akler, an experienced ophthalmologist practicing in Dearborn and Sterling Heights, Michigan, is pleased to provide the latest techniques in cataract evaluation and surgery.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a safe, painless procedure that corrects cloudy vision. Done in an outpatient surgery center, the cataract is removed through a tiny incision that does not require stitches and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) which focuses the light on the back of the eye.

There are a number of different intraocular lens (IOL) options available to patients. Standard IOL’s correct the distance vision, but reading glasses are still necessary. Multifocal implants such as the Crystalens® provide more range of vision from distance to near, reducing dependency on reading glasses postoperatively. If astigmatism is present, a toric lOL will best correct the distance vision.

At the Akler Eye Center, we tailor your cataract surgery to your lifestyle and unique visual needs. Our goal is to give you the best possible visual result based on your specific needs and desires.
