Winter Update

Dr. Akler about to perform cataract surgery in Kenya during a mission trip in 2023

Dear colleagues, friends, patients and family,

Happy new year! I hope you enjoyed the holidays and are staying warm and dry – always challenging in the great state of Michigan!

This month we will check in on what is new with LASIK and other laser vision correction procedures. LASIK is a procedure that uses a laser to change the shape of the cornea so that it bends light rays to focus on the retina. People who are nearsighted (myopia) farsighted (hyperopia) and who have astigmatism can benefit from LASIK. The ideal candidate is 21 years or older, has a stable prescription and healthy eyes. At Akler Eye Center we do a very comprehensive screening examination to see if you are a candidate, including measuring the thickness and shape of your cornea and performing a very thorough eye examination. I will then spend time with you discussing the procedure, common side effects of the procedure and what to expect as you heal.

People have heard some frightening things about possible complications from LASIK. Like any surgery, LASIK does have risks. However, studies have shown that serious complications are rare and patients overall are thrilled with their results. The good news is that newer FDA studies have shown that with the new lasers that are now used the risk of unwanted side effects has gone down substantially.

In some patients, the cornea may be too thin for LASIK to be safe. In this case we may recommend PRK, a procedure very similar to LASIK but in which a flap is not created. This procedure is very safe and offers the same great visual result that LASIK does.

If you have any questions about LASIK or other eye health concerns, please call the office – we are always here to answer your questions and guide you.

I look forward to seeing you in the office soon and GO LIONS!

Warmly,

Dr. Michelle Akler
