Spring 2024 – Solar Eclipse Coming!

Dear colleagues, friends, patients and family,

In less than one week, on April 8, a solar eclipse will take place. A solar eclipse happens when the moon blocks the sun from our view. It will be a partial eclipse (moon partially blocks the sun) locally, but if you are game to head south to Toledo, you will be in the path of totality (moon completely covers the sun). In this email we will explore the importance of eye protection during viewing of the eclipse.

Looking directly at the sun during most parts of the eclipse can permanently damage your vision and can even cause blindness. The only time it is safe to look directly at the sun is when it is completely covered by the moon during the totality phase.

To safely enjoy the eclipse, you must use eclipse glasses or a hand-held solar viewer. Sunglasses and other dark glasses are not protective. The filter in eclipse glasses must meet a word-wide standard know as ISO-12312-2. Here is a list of suppliers of safe solar viewers that are approved by the American Astronomical Society.

Let's hope the weather cooperates!

Warmly,

Dr. Michelle Akler
