Dr. Akler presenting her research and teaching yoga at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting in San Diego
Dear colleagues, friends, patients and family,
It has been some time since my last email – spring has been a very busy season for me!
I was fortunate to have been invited to present at a symposium at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons on ergonomics. It was an honor to combine my love of both ophthalmology and yoga and to teach my colleagues simple ways to protect their neck and back. I presented a research study I conducted on this topic as well as participating as an invited panelist in another free paper session about cataract surgery complications.
In other sessions, I learned about a new drug for a specific form of dry macular degeneration called Syfovre. This medication is delivered by injection to treat a type of dry macular degeneration called geographic atrophy. The drug has been shown to reduce the size of blind spots in this advanced form of macular degeneration. However, there are some significant side effects including an increased risk of developing the wet form of macular degeneration.
Also on the horizon are new cataract implants called Spyglass. These special implants dispense glaucoma medication for 3 years after implantation in the eye, possibly allowing less dependence on medicated eye drops in those with both cataracts and glaucoma. Also in development are special sensors that can continuously monitor eye pressure in patients with glaucoma. Both of these technologies are still in the research phase and are not available commercially.
There are also some new advanced technology cataract surgery implants becoming available – more on those in the next email!
Enjoy the lovely weather and I look forward to seeing you and your family and friends at the office!
