Mid-Winter 2024 Update

Dr. Akler about to perform cataract surgery in Kenya during a mission trip in 2023

Dear colleagues, friends, patients and family,

It's hard to know if it's spring or winter this week in Michigan! One thing that is certain – the days are getting longer so true spring is coming!

This month we will review a couple of hot topics – pickleball eye safety and safety of over-the-counter ocular lubricant products.

Pickleball – please don't pretend you have not heard of this fast-growing and popular sport! Players hit a perforated plastic ball with hard paddles on a court that is approximately half the size of a tennis court. The ball moves quickly and happens to fit nicely into the eye socket. Players often stand close to the net, leaving them little time to dodge a fast-flying ball. Injuries that can occur include corneal abrasions (painful scratch on the eye surface) to dislocated lenses and retinal tears and detachments. Eye protection, while not mandated, is strongly recommended to avoid eye injury. Ideal protection would be wrap-around goggles, but even sunglasses or your prescription eyeglasses are better than no protection. If you are hit with a pickleball and have eye symptoms such as loss of vision, pain or floaters, please be seen by an ophthalmologist urgently!

Regarding over-the-counter artificial tears and ointments, this week the FDA issued a voluntary recall of 4 store-brand eye ointments; two were Walmart brand and one was a CVS brand due to concern about sterility. If you have any of these products discard them immediately. If you are unsure which brands are safe, please call the office and we can provide you with a resource sheet to guide you.

I look forward to seeing you in the office soon and LET'S GO RED WINGS!

Warmly,

Dr. Michelle Akler
