Dr. Akler preparing to perform cataract surgery in Kenya
Dear colleagues, friends, patients and family,
I have just returned from my third ophthalmology surgical mission trip to Kenya. Our team saw over 500 patients and performed nearly 100 sight-saving cataract surgeries over three days.
It is a challenging, humbling yet very uplifting experience to participate in these missions. The patients have no access to medical care and hence their diseases are in the end stages when they present to the Kenya Relief clinic. We do our best to help them with very limited resources. When examining cataract postoperative patients on the final day, there was one elderly woman who could not see to walk to the examination chair. We removed the patch from her surgical eye and she immediately was able to see well enough to make her way to the chair unassisted. That is all I need to witness to know we had done good work in Migori, Kenya. Our bodies and minds were tired but our hearts were full.
I hope you are all well and enjoying the beautiful fall colors here in Michigan. Please do not take your health for granted – continue to visit us for your eye health examinations and if you have any new eye symptoms.
I am very grateful for all of you and look forward to seeing you in the office soon.
Warmly,
Dr. Michelle Akler
