Safety Alert from the American Academy of Ophthalmology/Center for Disease Control
Dear colleagues, friends, patients and family,
Today I am writing to you about an urgent safety warning. The CDC is investigating a multi-state cluster of eye infections related to the use of EzriCare Artificial Tears (seen in the photo above). These infections have caused permanent visual loss and one death from a bloodstream infection.
This brand of tears are found on Amazon and are preservative free in a multi-dose bottle. If you have any of this product at home stop using it immediately. There are many brands of artificial tears available at your local pharmacy or big box stores that can be used safely. Non-preserved artificial tears, which we recommend following LASIK surgery and for those with sensitive eyes, should be in individual vials. Common brands that are found locally are Refresh, Systane and Thera tears.
